Hi, I’m Andy! Agape Adoption Agency’s new Intake & Outreach Specialist, and I’d like to talk to you about Coronavirus.
I’d love to spend my first blog post telling you my own personal story and journey with foster care and adoption, and at some point, I will. But, right now, we’ve all experienced a major life event that will forever shape our psyche, as well as our emotions, let alone the mental state of the children in our care. I learned early on in trauma-informed care training that you never ask, “what’s wrong with you?” Instead, you ask, “what happened in your life?” This question, right now, has one answer….Coronavirus.
The kiddos in your care just had one more level of trauma added to their lives. Perhaps these kids had just begun to adjust to a new house, new family, new school, and suddenly, they’re homeschool kids that can’t play at the park or go get pizza and the visits they had with their biological families are now via video. One more layer of trauma. So, instead of telling you what you should do or not do in this unprecedented time, I want to open it up for dialogue and comments.
What have you been doing throughout the Coronavirus pandemic to help the kids feel safe and secure?
How have the kids been experiencing this? How have you been experiencing this?
What stay at home rhythms have you established?
Please, flood this blog with your comments. We want to hear from you!
